Name change on driving licence

After a name change, we recommend exchanging the driving licence (especially when travelling abroad), but it is not mandatory.

Course description

1. Please submit your application together with all the necessary documents.

  • You can submit the application by post or online
  • By post: Please complete the application in full, sign it and send it to us together with the required documents. You can find the application forms under Links and Downloads.

2. Once your application has been recorded, you will receive a notification with your processing number. This will also tell you how to check the processing status online.

3. As soon as your driving licence is ready for collection, you have two options:

  • You can make an appointment online to collect it, or
  • You send us your old driving licence together with a form. You can download the form in the processing status query as soon as the driving licence can be handed over. Once we have received your old driving licence, we will automatically send you your new driving licence by post.

Prerequisites

  • Your main residence is registered in Munich.
  • The change of name has already been noted at the registration office.

Duration and costs

Processing time

about 14 weeks. The processing time applies from submission of the complete documents.

Change of address for identity card, passport, eAT

If you move within Munich, move to Munich or your address has changed, you should have the address changed in your identity documents.

Adaptation of the gender entry and first name (Self-Determination Act)

Does your officially registered gender not match your personality? Then you can decide how your gender and first name will be indicated in future.

Deregister residence

If you move abroad, give up a secondary residence or no longer have a permanent residence, you must deregister.

Second home tax

If you or family members use other flats in Munich in addition to your main residence, you must pay second home tax.

Name change in the vehicle documents

If the name of the person or the company name to which a vehicle is registered changes, this must be entered in the vehicle documents.
