Funding for charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

If you install a charging station for electric vehicles or an electric pre-installation, a subsidy was possible.

Course description

Charging infrastructure is subsidised with 40 percent of the net costs. The maximum subsidy amount depends on the type of charging station:

  • Electrical pre-installation for charging points up to 22 kW: 1,000 euros per charging point
  • Charging station up to 22 kW: 500 euros per charging point
  • Charging station including pre-installation from 22 kW: 10,000 euros per charging point

Munich City Council has decided to end the "Climate Neutral Drives" funding programme on 2 July 2025. Applications can no longer be submitted.Applications that have already been approved are not affected by the funding freeze. The funding is still reserved.

Prerequisites

  • Supply of the charging infrastructure with green electricity
  • Location in the city of Munich on private property (publicly or not publicly accessible)
  • A maximum of 50 charging points and 50 pre-installations per calendar year and applicant are subsidised.
  • At least one charging station with at least one charging point must be installed in a funding project.

For specific requirements, please refer to the funding guideline for electric mobility under "Links & Downloads".

Required documents

  • The documents required in the proof of utilisation can be found in the funding guidelines.
  • Evidence required by homeowners' associations (WEG) is listed in the "Information sheet for WEG" under "Links & Downloads".
  • You can only submit the documents in the funding portal with the proof of use. As a rule, documents sent by email cannot be accepted.

Duration and costs

Processing time

You can find the processing time for newly submitted where-used lists in the funding portal.

If we have to request additional proof of use due to incompleteness, we will process your application again within six weeks of receiving the missing documents.

Please refrain from enquiring about the individual processing status. This helps us to shorten processing times.

Questions & Answers

It is not possible to subsidise exclusively electrical pre-equipment.

At least one charging station with one charging point must be applied for and installed per application.

Up to ten electrical pre-installations (i.e. for 10 parking spaces) can be subsidised per charging point installed or applied for. One "LIS pre-installation for normal charging point" funding object must be applied for per parking space in order to receive the maximum possible funding.

In addition, the charging stations must be applied for and installed as part of a subsidised project. Installation outside the subsidised project is not possible.

No, as a mandatory prerequisite for funding is both the use of green electricity and the location in the city of Munich. Therefore, only charging stations that are permanently connected to the existing domestic grid can be subsidised.

A connected charging station via a plug connection is not eligible for funding.

The electrical pre-installation includes all work including work on the house connection up to the electrical connection at the charging point's parking space. This includes costs for planning, load management and cabling. Earthworks that are directly related to the charging infrastructure can also be counted towards the costs of pre-installation.

You can find detailed information on the funding of charging infrastructure in homeowners' associations (WEGs), such as information on the correct application process, dealing with common and special property and the required evidence, under "Links & Downloads" in the "Information sheet for WEGs".

The charging infrastructure may only be purchased or ordered once authorisation has been received following the application in the online portal .

Yes, a down payment counts as a concluded purchase contract and is only permitted after receipt of the authorisation following the application on the online portal .

A down payment as part of crowdfunding also counts as the start of procurement.

Charging infrastructure is funded at 40 per cent of the net costs. The maximum funding amount depends on the type of charging station:

  • Electrical pre-installation for charging points up to 22 kW: 1,000 euros per charging point
  • Charging station up to 22 kW: 500 euros per charging point
  • Charging station including pre-installation from 22 kW: 10,000 euros per charging point

In the case of charging infrastructure, funding is available for purchase, hire or leasing. The leasing or rental costs are subsidised over 3 years.

In the case of a leasing/rental charging solution in particular, please always also apply for the funding object "LIS pre-equipment for normal charging point" for each normal charging point so that the maximum possible funding can be provided.

Yes, used charging stations are eligible for funding. An invoice from a dealer is required.

Purchases from private individuals are not eligible.

A serial number must be provided for each subsidised item. In the case of cargo bikes and trailers, this is usually engraved directly on the frame or on a sticker.

In the case of wallboxes , the serial number can be found either on the test report or on the type plate directly on the wallbox housing, often also under a bar/QR code.

In the case of pre-installation , the serial number is the parking space number. A photo or the document showing the serial number is sufficient as proof of the serial number in the funding portal.

A holding period of three years (36 months) is mandatory for each subsidised charging device. The holding period begins with the payment of the subsidised amount.

Subsidised charging facilities must be installed within the city limits of Munich and be operated with 100 percent green electricity.

The installation may only take place on private property and in publicly or non-publicly accessible areas.

A maximum of 50 charging points and 50 electrical pre-installations per calendar year and applicant are eligible for funding.

Double funding with federal or state funding programmes is excluded.

Once the funding has been used up, there is no further entitlement to funding.

We recommend always applying forthe respective pre-installation for each normal charging point so that the highest possible funding can be achieved. Thefunding object "LIS pre-installation for normal charging point" always refers to only one parking space.

If documents are found to be missing when the proof of use is checked, they will be requested a maximum of twice. If repeatedly requested documents/evidence are not available, funding is not possible.

Legal basis

The "Climate-neutral drives" funding programme is a voluntary service provided by the City of Munich. There is no legal entitlement to funding.

The allocation of funding depends on how much money is available in the city budget.
