The run-off election for Lord Mayor will take place on 22 March 2026. Anyone who is eligible to vote can vote in the polling station or apply for a postal vote.

Course description

You can apply for postal voting documents in various ways. Please decide which method you prefer. You cannot apply by telephone!

If you have already applied for postal voting documents for the run-off election in the local elections, you do not need to submit another application!

The postal voting documents will be sent out from 10 March 2026 at the earliest. This is independent of when you submit the application.

Please note: If the postal voting documents are to be sent to a different address, please enter this address in addition to your home address.

  1. apply online You can apply for postal voting documents online. This is possible from 10 to 17 March 2026, 11 am. After this time, it can no longer be guaranteed that the postal voting documents will arrive by post in time for the election.
  2. Apply by post If you would like to request the postal voting documents by post, please send the application in good time. This will give you enough time for the return postage. You can use the application form, but please contact us by 16 March 2026 at the latest if you would like to receive the postal voting documents by post. If we receive your application later, we cannot guarantee that you will receive the documents on time.
  3. Pick up in person You can pick up your postal voting documents in person from 10 March 2026. This is possible at the district administration department and at the district inspectorates. You will find the relevant addresses on your election notification. Collection is possible until 20 March at 3 pm.   4. applying for postal voting documents by proxy If you would like to collect or apply for postal voting documents by proxy on behalf of another person, there are a few things to bear in mind.

  • If you send the application for postal voting documents to the electoral office by post, you must pay postage and use stamps.
  • You can return the postal ballot letter with the completed ballot paper to the electoral office without a stamp.
  • You only have to pay the standard national postage if you send the postal ballot letter back to the electoral office from abroad.

Questions & Answers

You can vote by post even if you are abroad. We will send the postal voting documents to your place of residence. Please enter the address where you are in addition to your main place of residence in Munich.

Please note: Mailing times abroad are often longer. This also applies to postage from abroad.

Remember when you apply for postal voting documents: You bear the risk of sending them abroad!

If you have requested postal voting documents but have not received them after eight days, please contact the electoral office immediately. Please note that postal voting documents can only be sent out from 10 March.

You can collect the documents until Friday, 20 March 2026, 3 p.m., from the district administration office and the other postal voting distribution points.

Locations and opening hours

If you want to change the polling station, you must apply for a polling card with postal voting documents.

You can go to any polling station in Munich with the polling card.

Please note: You cannot hand in the postal voting documents in our polling stations on election day! However, you can vote with the polling card (part of the postal voting documents) in the polling station if you have a valid ID with you.

The completed postal voting documents must be received by the electoral office by 6 p.m. on election Sunday, 22 March 2026 at the latest.

Use the official letterboxes and special drop-off points on the election weekend. You can post your election letters there until 6 p.m. on Sunday, 22 March 2026.

Please note: You cannot hand in postal voting documents in our polling stations. However, you can vote in the polling station with your ballot paper, provided you have a valid form of ID (passport or identity card) with you.
